Stars

My mind is not awake
I run away from shadows
these shadows call my name
and tell me that I’m little

I want to be tall
and with it comes power
but what is power but lessons
that humanity is left with no answer

I trip over a slab of concrete
and just to be sure of tripping
I walk backwards over it
and trip again

The destination is far
so I cannot see it

But just because I don’t see the stars
does it mean that they are not there?

Open your eyes!
Open your heart!

But then naysayers would say
How will you ever reach your destination?
There are so many snakes and sticks
and one should never mistake a snake for a stick.

But beyond that is the cunningness of man
that I have learned to detect deception! –in service of bold inaction
My ears prick like a wolf
and my senses stir at the slightest movement

All I see are snakes –sticks have long left this world.

But tell me
Are sticks not useful to all of mankind?
That they should kindle fire
makes spears and houses?

Tell me
has this one snake lately
pressed a hundred-times its weight
into your psyche and mind?

Well then humanity –what do I see of thine?

Woe is the man that runs from shadows!
For he sees nothing but escape.

Woe is the man that wants for power!
For he sees nothing but a game.

Woe is the man that trips for himself!
For he sees nothing but the same.

Woe are all these men!
For they cannot see a thing.

But woe is the man that sees no stars!
For his heart has no destination –far.

And woe is the man that sees all snakes!
For his heart has no destination –near.

Woe are all these men!
For they can see but their hearts cannot lead.

Woe is the man –for in his eyes and heart he must see
that his destination and salvation
would have him run to his shadow
and pick up many sticks.
